United States Census 2010
Data is important to the delivery of city services and one of the most important data sources is the decennial U.S. Census. One purpose of the Census is to provide a count of the population so seats in the U.S. House of Representatives can be reapportioned. As a result of Census 2010 Washington State gained a new 10th congressional seat.
The Census also provides data on five demographic characteristics and one housing/financial subject. Demographic Characteristics are: age, sex, hispanic origin, race, and relationship to householder. The housing/financial characteristic is tenure of the householder (owner or renter).

American Community Survey
Beginning in 2005, the more detailed characteristics of the population, including economic, social, housing and financial characteristics, formerly collected on a sample basis through the Census Long-Form, are now collected through the American Community Survey (ACS). Unlike the Census, which is a point in time count, the American Community Survey collects sample data from about three million addresses nearly every day and summarizes it over 1, 3 and 5 year periods. One year estimates are only available for populations of 65,000 or more so only three and five year estimates are available for Shoreline which had a population in the 2010 Census of 53,007 almost unchanged from the Census 2000 population of 53,025.
